Description

The JSW VIMS Maternity and Pediatric Hospital in Bellary, Karnataka, reimagines public healthcare architecture as a catalyst for healing and well-being. This 400-bed facility is designed to set a new benchmark for maternity and pediatric care in Bellary, Karnataka. Spanning 2,00,000 sq. ft., the hospital integrates nature, efficiency, and patient-centred design to create a nurturing and high-performing medical environment.

Planning and Spatial Distribution

The 400-bed Mother & Child Care Hospital accommodates state-of-the-art maternity and pediatric facilities while zoning strategy ensures a logical flow between key departments—OPD, diagnostics, IPD, and surgical care—facilitating efficient operations and seamless user navigation.

The rectilinear plot enables an efficient floor plan, optimising spatial planning. The ground level is primarily designated for public functions such as OPD, diagnostics, and emergency services, while the upper levels house critical care, surgical suites, and  IPD wards units on the top. Scooped courtyards ensure that even the upper floors benefit from daylighting, ventilation, and direct views of green spaces.

The staggered arrangement of the IPD floors not only introduces space planning flexibility but also enhances patient privacy while maintaining a cohesive connection to common areas. Circulation paths are zoned, separating patient, staff, and service flows to prevent cross-contamination and optimize operational efficiency.

Architecture that enhances Well-Being

A central courtyard forms the heart of the hospital, fostering natural ventilation, daylighting, and a seamless connection to nature providing opportunities of respite to patients, relatives and caregivers alike. Designed as a passive cooling system, the courtyard regulates airflow, reducing heat buildup and ensuring thermal comfort. Beyond its environmental benefits, this space transforms the hospital into a place of calm and respite, where healing begins upon arrival.

The architectural concept revolves around the courtyard, allowing for natural light and ventilation. The courtyards are strategically staggered to optimize the Venturi effect, enabling hot indoor air to rise and escape naturally, maintaining thermal comfort across common spaces. These landscaped courtyards improve air quality and provide patients with visual and physical access to nature—an element proven to accelerate healing and promote mental well-being.

The exterior expression balances efficiency and speed of construction with design intent. Modular GRP jalli and strategically placed punched windows enhance shading and ventilation while maintaining a cost-effective, high-impact aesthetic.

Seamless Accessibility and Movement

User experience shapes the hospital’s circulation strategy. Clearly defined public, staff, and material pathways streamline movement, while intuitively placed drop-off zones improve accessibility. The layout ensures that patients and caregivers experience an intuitive and supportive environment by minimising stress and maximising clarity.

Sustainability as a Design Imperative

JSW VIMS Bellary prioritises environmentally responsive strategies—integrating passive cooling, natural daylighting, and thermal efficiency to minimise energy demands. The building’s courtyards improve indoor air quality and thermal comfort while reducing reliance on mechanical systems. The façade system, composed of GRP jalli and punched windows, provides effective shading and enhances energy efficiency.

The design ensures cross-ventilation at the pedestrian level through the staggered courtyards, while the Venturi effect actively supports passive cooling. The material palette remains simple and cost-effective, reflecting the ethos of this CSR initiative.

This project is an architectural statement on the power of design to transform care environments. By embedding sustainability, functionality, and community well-being into every aspect, JSW VIMS Bellary exemplifies how healthcare spaces can go beyond treatment to become places of comfort, dignity, and progress.
