Description
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Campus in Kalyani, West Bengal, India, by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has been designed keeping in mind the AIIMS’s trinity of goals: Education, research, and patient care.
The 180-acre campus is located in the southern part of West Bengal state. The medical zone stands with a 960-bed hospital and outpatient department. The residential zone is strategically located on the southern end of the site and includes quarters for faculty, nursing staff, and students’ hostels, along with amenities such as a Faculty Club, a student recreation centre. The best practices of evidence-based design have been incorporated so as to focus on creating a holistic model where patient treatment, research, and both healthcare receiver and provider receive equal support and have a good user experience.
The design follows a formal geometric approach to campus planning amalgamating the conventional academic quad and unconventional recreation zones to strike a perfect balance. The medical zone is connected to the academic quad by a
boulevard that runs across the site as the central green spine. These zones are located in close proximity to encourage and generate a sense of community among residents, patients, students, and medical staff/faculty. The design includes a state-of-the-art training centre that will focus on simulation based medical teaching and learning.
The site zoning and circulation is categorised into public, private, service, and emergency zones, illustrating the careful organization and functioning of an institution as AIIMS. Other facilities in the campus include AYUSH Block and a Dharamshala for the patients from far of places.
