Description

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Campus in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has been designed to deliver world-class patient care, education and research facilities.

The 150-acre campus comprises healthcare, academic and residential zones to create a holistic environment. The medical zone stands with a 960-bed hospital and outpatient department. The residential zone is strategically located on the western end of the site and includes quarters for faculty, nursing staff, and students’ hostels, along with amenities such as a Faculty Club, a student recreation centre. The best practices of evidence-based design have been incorporated so as to focus on creating a holistic model where patient treatment, research, and both healthcare receiver and provider receive equal support and have a good user experience.

The site is located in the MIHAN development project area and by virtue of the site form; it gives ample opportunities to create interesting linkages between different zones of the site, walkways lined with extensive greens and orange groves create a well-knit pedestrian friendly campus. The circulation pattern is divided into public, private, service, and emergency zones, illustrating the careful organization and functioning of an institution as AIIMS.

The design follows a formal geometric approach to campus planning amalgamating the conventional academic quad and unconventional recreation zones to strike a perfect balance. The medical zone is connected to the academic quad by a boulevard that runs across the site as the central green spine. These zones are located in close proximity to encourage and generate a sense of community among residents, patients, students, and medical staff/faculty
